Air removed by the exhaust system must be replaced through a planned path. Poorly located or uncontrolled incoming air can reduce extraction performance, disturb a smoke layer, affect doors or move smoke toward escape routes.
They may be usable only when the approved design allows it and the equipment, temperature rating, air path, dampers, controls, power and normal HVAC functions are suitable for the required smoke-control mode.
Testing follows the documented sequence and design criteria. It can include initiating the fire mode, confirming fans and dampers, checking status signals and shutdowns, and measuring exhaust and replacement-air performance under the required power conditions.
