Fire protection for manufacturing facilities

A factory’s processes, materials and operating constraints determine the protection decisions that need technical review.

Decisions shaped by this facility

Start with the occupancy, hazards, layout, installed condition and available project information.

01
Process and material hazardsProduction steps, fuel or chemical use, hot work, packaging and storage areas should be identified rather than treated as one uniform factory risk.
02
System coordinationDetection, alarms, water-based systems, shutdown signals and response equipment need a clear interface plan tied to the actual production areas.
03
Lifecycle accessValves, detectors, panels, extinguishers and test points must remain reachable after machinery, partitions or production lines change.

Operational constraints to identify early

  • Plan surveys and intrusive work around production schedules, permits and safe access.
  • Separate clean, wet, dusty, hot and high-bay areas when reviewing equipment and detection conditions.
  • Document temporary impairments and restoration steps when work affects an operating system.

Starting points for new and existing work

New construction, expansion or fit-out

For new production space, DGRB can coordinate the proposed fire-protection scope with the facility layout, process zones and available project documents before installation begins.

Existing-system maintenance, upgrade or rectification

For an active plant, DGRB first reviews the installed systems, current production arrangement, known deficiencies and safe work windows before proposing maintenance, rectification or expansion work.

What to send for the assessment

  1. Process description and facility zoning
  2. Architectural, mechanical, electrical and fire-protection plans
  3. Material and storage information relevant to the requested scope
  4. Existing panel, sprinkler, pump, tank and standpipe records
  5. Shutdown windows, access rules and known authority comments

Relevant systems and equipment

Frequently asked questions

Does one protection package fit an entire factory?

Usually not. Production, storage, utility and office areas can present different conditions and should be assessed by zone.

Can work be planned around production?

Yes, provided operating restrictions, access rules and shutdown windows are shared before the scope and schedule are agreed.

Can DGRB review an expansion?

Yes. Send the proposed layout and existing system information so interfaces, capacity questions and required site checks can be identified.
